Our Guest Travel Blogger, Kate Nabel of Paris and the World, shares her tips and tricks for exploring Marrakesh.
Marrakesh is one of the most beautiful cities in Africa and will for sure surprise you in several ways! The city, also known as the red city in Morocco is overloaded, colorful, loud and magical at the same time. There is so much to do in Marrakesh! Follow my tips for the best experience:
1: Visit the Koutoubia Mosque
The largest mosque in Marrakesh is located in the southwest of the old town, the medina, and is also known as the Mosque of the Booksellers. It is surrounded by pretty palm tree gardens and has a great plaza.
2: Get lost in the Medina
I’m not sure how many times I lost my way in the medina of Marrakesh! All of the narrow alleyways and passageways you come across along with the small local shops between the different souks look quite similar! It’s not easy for people without a strong sense of direction, like me, to find their way, but getting lost is fun anyway!
3: Drink mint tea at a rooftop terrace
I can highly recommend the rooftop terrace at Café de France to enjoy a great view of the city and the main square, the Jamaa el-Fna and the Atlas Mountain, especially at sunset! You can find another great terrace with a view at Cafe des Epices in the medina.
4: Discover the souks
The souks and markets in the north of the Jamaa el-Fna are the heartbeat of Marrakesh and my favorite part of the city. I wish I could squeeze all the beautiful lamps, colorful ceramics and spices in my carry on baggage!
5: Spend the evening at Jamaa el-Fna
During the day you can find orange juice stalls, brass cup sellers and snake charmers at the huge main square in the red city. At night, the plaza turns into an open air restaurant and becomes crowded with locals and tourists, artists, magicians and entertainers.
6: Relax in the Bahia Palace
Just a few steps away from the souks you can find the Bahia Palace with a beautiful set of open rooms and gardens, which is the perfect place to relax after an exiting day in Marrakesh!
7: Fall in love with the colors of Marrakesh
There are so many shades to take in, this is no problem at all!
Over to you: Have you ever been in Marrakesh? How do you like that colorful place on earth?
